St. Maarten – Member of Parliament Cornelius de Weever will take legal action against VVD-MP André Bosman who did not react to a summons to retract “erroneous, slanderous and defaming statements” before the deadline of last Monday at 5 p.m. On September 30, four different newspapers quoted Bosman as saying, “Heyliger simply paid De Weever.”

The remark refers to De Weever’s decision to withdraw his support for a coalition of the National Alliance and the United St. Maarten Party with the Democratic Party and his subsequent allegiance with Heyliger’s United People’s party.

On October 19, De Weever’s attorney Jairo Bloem summoned Bosman to retract this statement because it “lacks factual basis” and because it is “slanderous and defamatory towards client.”

Last week, Bosman said that he had never received first Bloem’s October 19 letter about this issue. “That letter was sent to the media and appeared somewhere on the internet but it was never sent to me. Who tells me that there is a real letter?”

This statement contradicts Bosman’s earlier statement in October, when he said that he wanted to discuss the content of the letter with his VVD-faction in Parliament.

Bloem notes in his new letter that the first open letter was emailed to Bosman and that his client received a read-receipt. Bosman’s public statements at the time made clear that he is well aware of the letter and the demands it contains.

Bosman told the Antilliaans Dagblad last week that it would have been “smart” to send the letter to him by registered mail.

This time, Bloem notes in his letter, the court petition will be sent to Bosman’s home address and that it will be served personally to him.

“Client views your latest reactions as attempt to evade the issue and unnecessary delay matters. You had ample time to address your shortcomings. The summons sent and deadlines given are in conformity with the law. You are presently in default and client will consequently initiate proper legal procedures against you,” the letter states
